This is a regular working day in Mumbai, India. The lines outside the ATMs and Bank tellers are getting serpentine, and people are losing their patience, the banking servers have crashed. In a short while stock market Servers crash, and airlines & train bookings are not accessible. Airliners in the air and trains on the tracks are running amuck without any controlling, without signals. Almost every online economic activity has ceased to exist, and slowly it starts spreading across the nation. In a short while, mobile services stop, emergency response systems crash, and water supply to the Mumbaikars stop. Then comes the worst news, the power grids have crashed. The financial capital of India is a dark patch on the mother earth, incommunicado; inaccessible, spiraling down the labyrinth. India is under attack, and the attackers are invisible.

The scenario is very scary and is not from any Sci-Fi movie. Some of it has already happened in the past. The rest of it could be very much possible in the near future, in any city, in any country, across the globe. Are we, knowingly or unknowingly inching towards a very different kind of war? ‘The Cyber War’ – are we ready for it?

A very thought provoking article as always Sandomina. The only thing I can say with any degree of certainty is that countries that are democratic will always have their work cut out to contain those countries that aren’t and want to change our world into theirs. Another great post.

I imagine a People’s Republic of China cyber attack on India is a strong possibility especially in lieu of the PLA’s defeat in hand-to-hand combat with India in the recent Himalayan border region conflict.

I completely agree with you in your assessment of our adversary and we have to safeguard our military and other important installation against such attack. We don’t have any dearth of cyber savvy minds, all the government needs, to employ them properly and immediately to build a strong cyber defence as well as offence mechanism.

Your article on cyber threats which are looming large. India though has attained much expertise as hard and soft power but we have not done much as far as eavesdropping and scrumptiously creating mayhem and destruction by the use of soft-power thereby making the engines of progress;; functioning of communication in air, road, road. banking, power grids, defence etc. Thus if this scenario results then this most inappropriate and most unethical besides immoral inhuman misdeed would be more disastrous than any other any other sordid things perpetuated till date.

Be that as it may, the scenario created would be worst than what has resulted due to WUHAN VIRUS. The best way is to produce and take counter=measures so as to save our country from the onslaught of the cyber attacks.

Your suggestions would assist in reading ourselves

A waking call in fact, a slumber in anyway would be counterproductive, therefore, countermeasures to be adopted and sooner these are contemplated and put to use would be better for us.

    Thanks and regards

You are absolutely correct. The scenario which is presently observed is really scary. Firstly the Covid-19, then the problem created by our neighbours and top it all, non-cohesive tendencies of our political classes to remain united to tackle problem head on. Some of our leaders are besmirching the stature of our country as though they are aliens and not members of this country.

The most important thing in these trying times is to stay united. The propaganda machine of enemies and rivals is working at its peak. The rise of India is suiting neither enemy nor fake friends.

Affirmative, the crying need of the hour is staying united in fighting the hidden enemy within and outside but some of our own people are stabbing at the back. We’ve to be careful in handling / dealing with such deadwoods.🙂🙂.

Is that possible if someone creates an alibi by the following scenario:
    1) Attacking India’s website via a VPN from China even though I am not in China, so that the IP address is seen (as if) from China.
    2) Send someone to China (or using someone in China) to attack India’s website from there, so that the IP address is detected from China.

    I’m just thinking critical.

Thanks for your response. The digital age is the age of proxy wars and alibi games. Two big countries in Asia that have abundant resources, educated experts, and have great potential as competitors for western domination are China and India. If I sit on the throne of western domination, then my human instinct is (be honest) reluctant to be rivaled. Perhaps I will play into the politics of “divide et impera” by creating alibi for my interests.

You have said: “Their level of cyber warfare and defense is very sophisticated”
Well, who are they that have capability at the top level? They must be the creators.
        Just ponder the questions below:
        1) Who is the creator of operating system (Windows, iOS, Android, Linux) that we use today?
        2) Who is the creator of internet (World Wide Web) that we use today?
        3) Who is the creator of the major programming language to create many application that we use today?
        4) Where is the location of servers that stores user data for popular social media applications that we use such as Whatsapp,Facebook, Instagram, Twitter?

Btw, I would like to know your comments in my latest post. If you have time 😉

Cyber security is indeed one of the big areas where the Chinese state seems to say nice things to the outside world, while being very protectionist to its domestic audiences. I recently read a piece of scholarship that talks about exactly this: https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/FP_20210405_china_cyber_power.pdf

The thing that worries me is where everything is going: to war or to peace? Is there any way to avoid war? Is China’s increasingly assertive posture an indication that it is confident about its rise, or is it actually a reflection of the increasing problems the CCP has? Or, could it possibly be international political attention becoming more hostile towards China, since China has always been very two-faced in its actions, but in the 1970s, 80s, 90s and even 2000s a lot of people were quite pleased with China becoming more powerful? It seems that it was only the increasing realization that foreigners couldn’t get China to go democratic, embrace human rights, and in general meet the “West” half way, that China had become the public-enemy No.1. What is your take?

Unfortunately, your assessment is correct. We are heading towards very tough times. Xi Jinping and CCP, in their lust for world supremacy, would put this very world in a very precarious position.
In all my interactions with Europeans, they still do not perceive China as a threat. For them, Russia is enemy number one. That is a flawed assessment.
I can just hope that I am wrong.

Unfortunately I was under the opinion that you would try to be somewhat neutral about the subject, but I believe your use of “lust for world supremacy” suggest a partisan motivation… I personally do not think you are living up to the motto of Impartial Information Always
