If 2020 was the year of pandemic then 2021 will be the year of creation of new blocks and disruptive technologies. Countries like China will take advantage of a vulnerable world and strengthen their position. This year may go down in the history when disruptive technologies would be seriously employed without giving much thought to human values.

The top likely and desired strategic trends of 2021 could be:

China moves to the Americas
The South China Sea is passé watch out for the Indian Ocean Region
NATO: Turkey out and Russia in
Halting the Chinese bandwagon in the Middle East and the Mediterranean
Pakistan in Israeli Orbit
Technology that scares you

China and EU moving closer.
More industries coming out of China (not due to supply chain issues, but Chinese labour is getting costly, they need to find cheaper avenues)
Rise of informal labour sector and gig economy
Extreme widening gap of rich and poor.
Lessening middle class.
Expansion of labour and lower class.
Automation of manual jobs

So I would just say that the USA is still the world leader, whatever China may say, therefore the United States must forge new partnerships, remodel older ones but never dump them. 2021 will be a year of disruption.

As the vaccines will be available soon, the changes are taking place will be faster. The RCEP has provided China with some much needed economic breathing space. It might be sufficient to keep itself afloat in the immediate future.

The PLA, however, is in a standoff with the Indian Army at the LAC. This might turn into a skirmish or mutate into a short-term war. The most likely time for this to happen would be the end of summer in the months of May-June.

Technology will the prime driver of business and economy in the future and will encompass our lives furthermore. The acceleration of technology started by the pandemic will only increase in the days ahead.

But the biggest geopolitical change is happening in the Middle East. The pandemic disrupted the entire oil-based economy. The drying of the oil wells and the coffers of these kingdoms whose economy was dependent on oil saw huge political and social upheaval. UAE secularising itself to an extent, women being given more rights in Saudi Arabia, the relaxation of the kafala system transmogrified onto the political stage with the Abraham Accords which saw the start of Arab nations starting to normalise ties with Isreal.

The year 2021 is one where the world is going to press the reset button.

Technology is scary. Don’t know if this is true or not, but I read somewhere that Big Tech is working on mind and thought-reading technology. I hope this isn’t true. Our thoughts are the freest commodity we have and the only things others don’t have access to. If they take those, we’re nothing but robots.
