XI’S NAPOLEAN MOMENT – BEGINNING OF THE END

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), was a French military leader and emperor. Napoleon rose through the ranks of the military during the French Revolution (1789-1799) at a very rapid rate. He seized political power in France in a 1799 coup d’état and crowned himself emperor in 1804.

  • During the Napoleonic Wars(1803-15), France conquered
    • Egypt,
    • Belgium
    • Holland
    • Northern Italy
    • Austria
    • Much of Germany
    • Poland
    • Spain
    • France directly conquered or controlled through alliance most of western Europe by 1812.
  • Over-ambitious Napoleon and Xi Jinping have a lot in common:
    • Both allowed their unlimited ambition to overwhelm the citizens of their own countries.
    • Thin-skinned and prone to self-promotion.
    • Both look for a combination of victories and flattery, inflating self-importance and achievements, suggesting their own brilliance(Xi Jinping Thoughts).
    • Both turn a less-than-glorious episode into the stuff of legend(Napoleon’s overexaggerated achievements in Egypt and Xi’s disinformation on OBOR) and presenting themselves as saviors of the nation.
    • Both started believing in their extraordinary luck, and eventually their own propaganda.
    • Their desire to show strength, at all costs.
  • Napoleon was a brilliant soldier and Xi must be an extraordinary politician to survive in China but both of them make horrible military-political blunders:
    • Both came to power on the plank of clean governance. However, Napoleon overthrew the Spanish monarchy (allies of France at the time) so that he could put a member of his own family on the Spanish throne. Xi Jinping has an estimated net worth of $1.51 billion(bloomberg.com) as of today. While he is purging corrupt leaders(so-called) his family and relatives are growing rich at breakneck speed.
    • Both start something they don’t know how and when to end. Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812, without any clear plan for how to end the war. Xi’s unnecessary aggression on Indo-Tibet border without the solution in sight, a trade war with the US, aggressive diplomacy with Australia; Japan; Taiwan, etc. The list goes on.
    • Both cannot accept defeat. Czar Alexander of Russia defied Napoleon, and he pushed half a million French army in harm’s way. Xi pushed 111 Chinese soldiers into Sureshot death when he pressurized the PLA again all advice for a lost campaign.
    • Napoleon insults and berates, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, Europe’s most shrewd diplomat in the 19th century. Xi goes a step further ahead and in the name of corruption, purges all opposition in the CPC.
    • While Napoleon was on the retreat from Moscow, a group of generals tried to grab power by declaring he had been killed in battle. Back home no one shed tears for the untimely demise of their glorious leader. The scheme fell flat, but it demonstrated to Napoleon that his whole edifice of imperial glory had feet of clay. Xi would be very disappointed to know what citizens think of dictators across the globe.

Besides all the above facts, there are three very important turning-points in Napoleon’s life, which stand out and demonstrate his fall from grace. One can judge Xi Jinping’s misadventures in the light of Napoleonic tragedy:

STANDOFF WITH INDIA – EQUIVALENT TO NAPOLEON’S RUSSIAN ADVENTURE

Courtesy: Hindustan Times

Armand de Caulaincourt, one of Napoleon’s closest advisors warned him against his misadventure in Russia. However, he went against all the advice and invaded Russia in 1812. Napoleon had superior army yet he failed to achieve the typical Napoleonic victory—utilizing his tactical genius to defeat his enemies in a pitched battle. Russian armies kept on withdrawing and declined to fight until the Battle of Borodino, near Moscow, which was indecisive. Napoleon seized Moscow but failed to take into account the Russian way of waging war. He thought that invading Moscow would compel the Russians to come to terms; instead, the Russians burnt down Moscow. Napoleon simply could not withstand the unfamiliar style of Russians. As a result, the normally goal-oriented Napoleon could not achieve his objectives and was instead forced to retreat from a devastated Moscow in winter. Napoleon’s 600,000 strong force reduced to less than 80,000 troops by the time they left Russia. Napoleon was unable to adapt his brilliant thinking beyond the localized context of the battlefield.

There is an uncanny resemblance between what Napoleon expected from Russians with what are Xi Jinping’s expectations from Indians. Indians did exactly what the Russians did. They defeated Chinese in the mind-games. China may believe intimidation and the sort of ‘salami-slicing’ in which it engages in the South China Sea will enable it to act without consequences against India, but India is not the Philippines, willing to roll over for a few yuan. The Chinese government was also overwhelmed by the Indian citizens, standing like a rock behind their government, similar to massive popular resistance to Napoleon’s invasion of Russia. PLA dreamed of undermining the resolve of the Indian Army. Xi’s plot fell flat when it pitched psychologically weak(as per reports, 30% of PLA active-duty soldiers seek psychological help) and product of one-child-policy force, against battle-hardened Indian troops.

THE QUAD – EQUIVALENT TO THE BATTLE OF NATIONS

Courtesy: The Asian Age

In the 1813 Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of Nations, Napoleon’s army was defeated by a coalition that included Austrian, Prussian, Russian, and Swedish troops. Afterward, Napoleon retreated to France, where in March 1814 coalition forces captured Paris. On 06 April 1814, Napoleon, then in his mid-40s, was forced to abdicate the throne. With the Treaty of Fontainebleau, he was exiled to Elba, a Mediterranean island off the coast of Italy.

The Beidaihe Annual Meeting(secret conclave of the Communist Party) in China is going to be held shortly. The meet is attended by 10 to 20 figures who still influence the Communist Party. Four prominent names are – former president Jiang Zemin, former Premier Zhu Rongji, former president Hu Jintao and former Premier Wen Jiabao. They might not agree with each other but they all hold a common ground on one thing which is Deng Xiaoping’s ‘tao guang yang hui’ diplomatic strategy, meaning “keep a low profile and bide your time”. China’s increasingly tense relations with the Quad (India, Japan, Australia, and the USA) might affect these old leaders personally, as many of their children and relatives, as well as those of high-ranking bureaucrats, have spent time in the U.S. studying, working and investing. Many hold significant overseas assets, including land and properties. Hundreds of millions of dollars could be at stake. The wrath of the Quad could destabilize China beyond a recoverable echelon. During the course of this gathering, Xi Jinping would be personally held responsible for rocking the apple cart and bringing the rest of the world together against China.

INVASION OF TAIWAN – EQUIVALENT TO NAPOLEON’S WATERLOO MOMENT

Courtesy: HI Sutton

On 26 February 1815, Napoleon escaped Elba and sailed to the France. Soon a coalition of allies(Austrians, British, Prussians, and Russians) who considered the French emperor an adversary, began to prepare for war. On 18 June, Napoleon’s 72,000 strong army marched towards the 68,000 strong coalition forces. The forces confronted each other in the village of Waterloo, near Brussels. Napoleon committed tactical errors and acted indecisively. Ultimately, the Battle of Waterloo marked the end of Napoleon’s glorious military career. On 22 June 1815, Napoleon was once again abdicated. He was exiled to the remote, British-held island of Saint Helena, in the South Atlantic Ocean. He remained there until his death.

In the annual work report published in the month of May 2020, Chinese Prime Minister Premier Li Keqiang dropped the word “peaceful” before “reunification” when discussing Taiwan. During the same month, President Xi Jinping, while addressing the PLA, directed them to “comprehensively strengthen the training of troops and prepare for war”. It looks like the hawks in Xi’s regime have gotten the upper hand and the invasion of Taiwan is inevitable. The invasion of Taiwan could become Xi Jinping’s Waterloo. If Xi orders PLA to undertake any such misadventures, it would be a huge gamble for armed forces which have not been deployed in combat duties during the careers of even their senior-most officers. PLAN has no experience in aircraft carriers and amphibious operations. On the other hand, Taiwan is not Crimea.  Militarily, Taiwan has capabilities that, coupled with Quad support, would repel an invasion, and inflict significant damage on China. A military failure along with a crashing economy and an unprecedented rise in unemployment would be a humiliating and possibly career-threatening experience for President Xi Jinping and for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

XI JINPING’S MISADVENTURES – CITIZENS WOULD PAY HEAVY COST

Courtesy: The Print

The CCP’s outlook is colored by a cynical notion in the power of greed. The party is convinced that Western governments are slaves of capitalist interests. The CCP believes that the West could not afford to lose access to the Chinese market, especially if their capitalist adversaries stood to profit as a result. Until now, the Western concessions in the face of Chinese assertiveness seemed to have vindicated the CCP’s Hobbesian worldview. After all, Bill Clinton had ended the link between China’s trading privileges and human rights, despite promising to act tough on China in his 1992 election campaign.

Before the rise of Modi and Trump, Chinese leaders had encountered virtually no pushback, despite overplaying their hand repeatedly. In Trump and Modi, China has finally met its match. Both of them are unafraid to utilize raw power against their foes. It is CCP’s tough luck that it has to defend against far more tenacious opponents. Today Western and Asian powers are willing to absorb enormous short-term economic pain. China has to realize that greed has lost its primacy and they have handed its adversaries a long-term strategic edge. CCP had never ever imagined that these countries would be willing to write off the Chinese market in the quest for larger geopolitical objectives. Since the end of the ‘Cultural Revolution,’ the CCP faces an existential threat for the first time. CCP leaders know that they have committed a strategic error and capitalistic suicide. The latest intervention in Hong Kong, the mass detention of Uighurs, aggression in the South China Sea, border clashes with India, handling of COVID-19 and thereafter vindictive actions against the vocal countries indicates that no one in China has guts to show Xi Jinping a mirror and how he is taking his country on a disastrous path.

This is a display of rare behavior by the Chinese policymakers, which not only exhibits traits of Napoleon but mental instability at the same time. Deng Xiaoping had warned the countrymen a long time ago about this over-concentration of power. He had warned them that if inside the system, voices of dissent or disagreement are not heard, then it would have a domino effect. One mistake would follow another. Xi Jinping is hell-bent upon reliving the disastrous mistakes of Napoleon.

The 1945 George Orwell novel ‘Animal Farm’ had two pigs as protagonists, ‘Napoleon’ the selfish egomaniac leader of the farm, and his challenger, another pig, ‘Snowball’. In present-day China, everyone knows who is Napoleon, but who would be the Snowball, only time would tell. People are talking about the impatience of the Chinese populace, but sound historians know that most tyrannies have been possible because opposing forces moved too late. It is not the case with the Chinese citizens. They understand the main principle of the Animal Farm very well. After all, they have the first hand experience: ”All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”.

      1. Very well compared two ambitious world leaders misadventure. Very good reading. By the end of your series I will be expert on Chinese politics n philosophy…..

      2. I think most probably the countries who in debt trap will sooner or later tell China (after China being humbled in the present scenerio)- ———
‘ who are you ? We can not and do not owe you any money’.

    1. have pressed the Self Destruct button either by choice or without knowledge of the repurcussions. I think his time has come to exit…..on mental health grounds…. Appreciate how you seem to have deep dived into China…We can call you SandyZen…

      1. Thank you so much for your kind words. A dictator is very scared of threats from within the nation and surprisingly welcomes the external threats. As per my sources, the same is the case with Xi. Since there were not many external threats existing, he is inventing them. After all, ‘Patriotism is the last refuge of any scoundrel’.

    2. Very interesting article. Every venture has a limit, hope Xi will realise sooner or later.

      1. Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your wonderful experience. Xi is scared of not the external but internal forces. Eventually, they would bring him down.

    3. Great read. A lot of work/ research to be able to compare these two. I too believe that Xi’s end is near, through an internal implosion. It could happen sooner, rather than later. However, the CCP will remain a long term strategic concern for India. India needs to bolster its capability in the intervening period. IOR region likely to pay rich dividends due “Malacca dilemma”, in case of war.

  1. Sandeep, great read. You know how to stand back and connect the dots. Years ago I read Thatcher’s autobiography, and one great takeaway i got was that what goes on behind the scenes is hidden from journalists (sorry lot). With you I get a feeling that you are opening doors into rooms where decisions are made. It is a little shocking you disclose your knowledge. But very refreshing and, at least for me, feels optimistic—we can handle anything as long as there are people who get it.

    1. Thank you so much, Michael. Your comments are always very encouraging. I do carry out my research thoroughly, and at times it takes 15 days to join the dots.

  2. Beautiful recounting of history, Sandomina! And so true. Xi Jinping is overdoing it which lets the rest of the world know that he is mentally unstable, greedy, and trying to expand “his empire” by trying to infiltrate other countries to buy businesses and land there. We’re wise to it now and Xi Zinping will fail MISERABLY! And his own country may exile his gross, nasty butt before it’s all said and done! Great piece you’ve written. Thank you so much!

    1. Thank you so much, Cherie, for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. It is indeed becoming serious now. China has opened many fronts and its aggression is increasing day by day. If it did not stop now, it would be too late for humanity.

      1. We won’t let that happen, Sandomina! Xi Zingping doesn’t even realize it yet, but we’re already wise to his plan. And he doesn’t know what our strategy is. I think he will be surprised because they’re walking into a trap.

      2. Cherie, you are so right. China is in for not just a surprise but a shock. The trap has been laid and the forces are waiting for the demon to be slayed.

      3. Cherie, all the signs indicate that there could action in the next 6-12 months. Seriously…

      4. Cherie, I don’t carry any grudge against hardworking Chinese people. It is the evil regime which is not only making Chinese citizens life difficult but showing unnecessary aggression towards their neighbors, and that attitude would take this regime down.

      5. I totally get that. I’m the same way. I’m really sad for the Chinese citizens. Lord, what they must put up with! 😢 It’s Xi Zinping and his goons I have a problem with.

Many people come here from over there for a better life and I don’t blame them. I am however afraid for them because Xi Zinping isn’t beyond trying to send people to the USA after the ones that leave China- or hurting their families who are still in China.

      6. That’s exactly what is happening. Chinese students in western universities are sent for spying. Their family members are left behind as security deposit. Just yesterday itself China has received a large number of requests from these students to return back to their country, but they have been told that they cannot return back without completing the task they have been sent for. The task is well known to everybody.

      7. Cherie, you would be surprised to know that Xi’s daughter studied at Harvard under a pseudonym. If he thought that China was so good, she would have studied in China and not in the USA.

  4. Very good but small disclaimer. Napoléon was a dictator that gain power by a coup d’état a French word as well. He force the Pope to claim emperor for his egomaniac style thinking that he was a Roman emperor. It will go down in history as another dictator. Cheers

  5. Thanks again for another informative, well-written post. Sad that humility is a non-existent virtue for most world leaders – past and present – and unfortunately seen by so many as a sign of weakness…

      1. Thank you so much, Jasbir. I had the support of over 500 tweets yesterday, that is overwhelming. I am leaving it at that. I told the publisher, that if he had asked me I would have given it for free. Almost 15 websites are borrowing my articles for free. 1. A dictator seeks power entirely for his own sake. He is not interested in the good of others; he is interested solely in power, pure power. CPC is different from the oligarchies of the past. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to CPC in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. CPC is not like that. CPC knows that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.

  6. Great insight, as usual. Only ego would allow them to come up with taking-on India and Taiwan at the same time, with “psychologically weak” front line military personal!?!?!!! They could lose that entire no-experience over-expensive navy trying to invade Taiwan. Yep, very informative post!

    1. Thank you so much, Karmi, for your thoughts and kind words. What you are saying is right. Opening too many fronts together is a suicide, but CPC is hell-bent upon committing the same.
Their armed forces have done almost next to nothing since the Vietnam war and in that also they came, distant runner-up.
However, they are thick heads and to control their own citizens they would just about do anything. Even a war is not ruled out in the next 6 to 12 months.

  7. Masterful and meaningful, as ever, Sandomina! Your linking of historical and current events adds to understanding. Thank you for your efforts.🙏

    1. Thank you so much, D’Nanda. It always amazes me how all the dictators behave in a similar fashion. They always believe in ”If I could I would”. They are scared of their own citizens because the greatest enemy of the dictator is their own nation.

      1. Agree whole-hearteadly! I’m amazed at how willing people here (at least in the coastal areas of the US) seem to be to loathe themselves – and to willingly abdicate personal choice and responsibility. I can only think about this in very small doses. 🙂

      2. Civil unrest, only tangentially-related to a suspect’s death in custody (in the Midwest) a month ago. “Protests” devolving into looting, property damage, loss of life, in some cases. The media coverage makes it look nationwide and unabated, but it’s not really. Frustrating that it diverts attention from other concerns, too.

      3. Oh, are you referring to George Floyd? That is really sad. I am aware of racial discrimination, that happens in India and other parts of the world. But one cannot start taking the whole country for a ride. About 2 years back, one Indian techie’s father was taking a stroll, in his neighborhood in the US. Some people found him to be suspicious and reported him to the police. The old man died in an encounter with the police. He was completely innocent. Why these people didn’t come out in his support? So I suspect a much bigger conspiracy than what meets the eye.

      4. So sorry to hear of this experience, @sandomina! Of course law enforcers cannot be above the law, ever. But, the hijacking of the George Floyd matter has left room for a much broader agenda here, as well. Saddening and frustrating at the same time. Appreciate the reply!

      5. My point is D’Nanda, where were these people 2 years back. Why are they selective? The movement should have been ‘All Lives Matter’.

  9. I really fear that your prophecy might come true. China is not going to stop until it destroys itself as well as the immediate neighborhood.

  10. Thanks dear for such an insightful write up on dictator ship and as to where Xi zingping and China are heading to!They are destined to meet their doom unless some right headed people throw him out of power!Lets keep our fingers crossed 🤞

    1. You are absolutely correct, the voice of dissent has to come from within. Other countries can only give support from outside. However, the time has come now to up the ante before it is too late for the whole of humanity. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.

      1. Ya,you are very much on the same wavelength!War is no good alternative but we are prepared for it is inevitable and thrust on us!Then it will be final resort to teach China that its ploy to occupy any territory illegally entails gross demolition of its own ill erected designs and structures !Its going to be a hard lesson from a seemingly gentle neighbor if need be 🙏

      2. Not just with India, China has opened up too many fronts. That’s called ‘Aapat Kaale Vipreet Buddhi’. It is digging its own grave. My estimate is 6-12 months we would see major action in our neighborhood.

      3. Definitely killing the demon will be the solution and a gift of peace to many neighbors striving hard to keep the dragon abay 😂😝🤣😜🙏

      1. Dear Dhawan
        A lovely article. Original thoughts.
My take is that the Indian Armed forces have to start being Pro active. We are always reactive. This costs us a lot.

What is the use of having such a huge Armed forces and always being reactive with everyone.

The result is that even Bangla desh is wagging its tail. Nepal , the less said the better.

One very nice read is ‘The Himalayan Blunder ‘ by Brig J S Dalvi. The brigade cdr of the only brigade which fought the 62 war.

Someone has to take on the Chinese to see where they stand. Anyone who takes them on in the present scenario will have the backing of the top guns.
These are interesting geo political times ahead.
A very nice article once again

      2. Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your immense experience.
I had touched up India being reactive in my previous article:

        https://insightful.co.in/2020/07/25/superpower-india-the-stumbling-blocks

In fact, that is the reason India doesn’t find the right place in the world order despite being such an important member. We are one of the largest and fastest-growing economies having one of the largest armed forces and populations. Despite that, if one observes the western media, there is hardly any mention of India. We shy away from giving our opinion on the important world matters, openly.
It is time we demand and take our due place in the world order.

  11. Insightful and absorbing. Great research indeed. Interesting parallels drawn between two leaders from different time lines though means of conduct akin to contemporary styles and requirements.

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your wonderful thoughts. It amazes me, time and again, how the dictators have been consistently behaving in a similar manner, in the recorded human history.

  12. Congratulations Sandeep on well researched article. Comparison between past n present leaders is really educative . Let’s see you soon as an “ Chinese “ expert on WION.
    All the best !!!

    1. That’s very kind of you. If China continues on its path, the way it is now, soon we all would be experts on Chinese bigotry and its dastardly attitude.

  13. You wrote an excellent analysis of Napoleon. In the end, Talleyrand betrayed him because too many people were dying and the whole of Europe was Napoleon’s enemy. It made no sense.

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your wonderful experience. You are absolutely correct about Talleyrand. In fact, berating Talleyrand publically and then expecting him to forget about that and be on his side, was one of the tactical mistakes Napoleon made.

  15. Interesting and informative.

Does Xi have a Napoleon complex? Perhaps. The big problem that any nation encounters when it builds up its military forces is that begins to see the use of that power as a solution. What most people fail to perceive is that the use of military power is a failure of diplomacy. Even if a nation commits its military forces and “wins” the war, it loses overall. Sometimes the losses are difficult to perceive, but they are there nevertheless.

Consider the nature of Napoleon’s military “victories”. Every time he won he hardened the resolve of his opponents to oppose him. What Napoleon gained in territory and tributaries he lost in the increased determination and resolve of his opponents. In spite of the fact Napoleon conquered Moscow and the people of Russia suffered great losses, for example, the Russians remained determined to resist, So, in the end we remember most the losses of France. Napoleon’s losses were horrific. It is amazing he stayed in power. His grand army return home gravely diminished, wounded, and in rags.

Thus far Xi has not actually engaged in a serious military adventure. He threatens with island fortresses in the ocean, border clashes, and various abuses against his neighbors. Instead of the geniality of which the Chinese are capable, Xi displays an age old Chinese arrogance, an arrogance that his neighbors find appalling, hateful, and threatening. With this arrogance Xi gains nothing. He just unifies his enemies against him, and his efforts at diplomacy fail before they have begun.

Hopefully, other Chinese leaders still have the power to restrain him and remove him from power. However, even if they could, I wonder if they will. Is the mindset that Xi displays one which they all share? I have no idea, but they did select that man to lead them.

    1. Thank you so much, Tom, for stopping by and sharing your vast experience.
It is true that China has not fought any war in over 40 years. However, the day is not far when he would be forced to do so. There is an internal friction brewing. The young leaders would not get the chance to lead the country, since Xi is the president for life. Due to the concentration of powers in Xi’s hands very few people are able to make money. Money is power in China(or for that matter everywhere in the world). Therefore anytime Xi sees any internal threat he opens a new external front. Patriotism is the last resort of every scoundrel, and Xi uses it very well for his own advantage.

      1. @sandomina

Glad you enjoyed my post as I enjoyed yours.

Patriotism is the last resort of every scoundrel, and Xi uses it very well for his own advantage.

Since there are some Americans who detest patriotism and nationalism, I will add this thought. Scoundrels do give patriotism/nationalism a bad name, but patriotism and nationalism are about loving our neighbors and countrymen, not an excuse hating anyone or other countries.

      2. I agree with you, Tom. I call myself a patriot, but I do not try to derive advantage out of that. Whereas, a scoundrel loves only himself and patriotism is just a tool in his hand.

  16. Very well articulated as always. Xi appointing himself as the President for life was the early warning sign that many failed to pick up, his obsession with OBOR/BRI and accelerating the race to challenge US supremacy have been very nicely compared to the rise and path of Napoleon. Your article gives solace that the end of Xi is not too far, but China may still survive after the fall of Xi………

    1. Thank you so much, Atul, for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. All his external exploits are to stop the internal unrest which is coming to the fore. Be it Indo-Tibet border, flexing muscles in the South China Sea, OBOR, or Iran deal.

  17. Wow. I love how this piece found the parallel of these two leaders. Both of them I think started as populist leaders who during both their time where perceived as savior of the people to bring about social justice. Napoleon used the cavalry to his advantage while Xi is using the power of finance. History will judge but I’m hoping that major conflicts will be avoided in the process of world domination or inclusive world development.

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. It still amazes me how the despots of different eras behave in a similar fashion.
No one wants war. It is a very costly and deadly affair. Even after winning a war one doesn’t really win. But who would drill that into the Chinese leadership’s head?

  18. Historical Analogy is one of my favourite topic on Geopolitcs. Wish to read more on the same based on Geopolitics

  19. Excellent and very interesting article. Yes, Napoleon was very prone to self- promotion. The newspapers under his control or those under the control of his supporters are an excellent example of successful PR.

    1. Thank you so much, Nitin.
